Mortar Board always strives to provide service to our community in many ways. One of the regular service events we do is a canned food drive to help collect food for families in need during the holidays. This activity always helps to raise awareness across campus about the local food banks and the importance of food drives. But this year we decided to kick it up a notch!
This time Mortar Board hosted a canned food sculpture event, where competing teams worked to build the biggest, tallest, most impressive sculpture made purely from canned food! This event took place in the lobby of the Brown-Lupton center and drew the attention of passerby and competitor alike as the sculpting took place. At the end of the day the compeitiors stepped back to admire their work and the following day Mortar Board judged the pieces that had been submitted.
1st Place - NASA Rocket Ship submitted by Student Life Staff
2nd Place - Piggy Bank & Money submitted by School of Business Administration
3rd Place - Athletic Tape submitted by Sports Medicine Society
At the end of the week, after the sculptures had been viewed by students, staff, and professors; all the cans were gathered up with the help of SOBA and donated to the Tarrant Area Food Bank. This donation went towards providing food for families in need across Tarrant County, just in time for the holidays!
Mortar Board was excited and proud of this event, and will plan to repeat the program next year with the goal of gathering even more donations, and even more extravagant sculptures!
