This fall, to help boost spirits and teach an important lesson, we set up a "lemonaid" stand with a greater purpose. To get our delicious drinks our patrons had to write down something that was keeping them down, bothering them, or impacting their life in a negative way onto a lemon that was handed out by "Life". They then got the chance to slice up that negative lemon, crush it with all their strength, and create a refreshing glass of cold lemonade!
This activity helped to remind students that we're all going through tough times in our lives, and we never have to let it get us down. Looking for the positives in life and maintaining the right attitude/mental mindset can make or break a struggling college student.
The negatives that some students wrote down ranged from "homework" and "studying", to "break-ups" and "being homeless". Despite the major or minor hardships that these students were going through, we managed to put a smile on their face and remind them to search for the good. Also, this activity opened up a dialogue with students who are going through rough times, and allowed us an opportunity to provide support, no matter how small.
So remember, "When Life Gives You Lemons... Make Lemonaid!"
